The successful candidate will be employed under a regular employment contract.
The position is to be filled at the earliest possible date and offered for a fixed term of three years.
The fixed-term employment is possible as it constitutes one of the fixed-term options of the Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz (German Act on Fixed-term Scientific Contracts).
This is a full-time position.
The successful candidate has the opportunity to pursue a doctoral degree in this position.
The salary is based on the German public service salary scale (TV-L).

Are you seeking a challenging PhD project at the interface between geology, machine learning and applied mathematics? Then a position in this project might be appealing to you:

The GeoBlocks project is a joint research project between several institutes at RWTH Aachen University and the University of Aberdeen with the aim of quantifying uncertainties in regional geological models. The project aims to understand uncertainties in rock units that are relevant for long-term safety in underground radioactive waste disposal.

The goal of this project is to scientifically research these uncertainties in geologic models from different perspectives and, from this, to explore methods for quantifying, visualizing and communicating geologic uncertainties in the context of geologic siting.

In this project, three positions for research assistants are to be filled at RWTH. The positions are fully funded for a three-year period, with an additional year if the project is successfully extended.

The positions include separate but connected areas of responsibility, with the goal of joint collaboration within the project. The individual projects are:

1st PhD or PostDoc: the creation of a workflow for geological modeling including the quantification and reduction of uncertainties (CGGR),

2nd PhD or PostDoc: the quantitative description of the spatial variability of the host rocks, (GIA).

3rd PhD: the development of methods for comparison of regions with variable data, (LIH).

The distribution of topics is exemplary and can be adapted according to the skills and interests of the applicants (team pooling). All aspects will be tested on representative geological models of the three host rocks: rock salt, shale and crystalline rock and merged into an integrated workflow.

This job advertisement refers to the first position at the Institute "Computational Geoscience, Geothermics and Reservoir Geophysics" at RWTH Aachen University. In this institute, we work on fundamental questions of subsurface analysis - both for scientific investigations and for applications in geothermal energy, raw material exploration, or underground storage. For this purpose, we combine methods from geology and geophysics and use the latest developments from the field of applied mathematics and computer science, for example in the field of machine learning and artificial intelligence. One focus is the geometric representation of relevant structures in the subsurface by integrating heterogeneous data, as well as a probabilistic estimation of the associated uncertainties.

Ihr Profil

Prerequisite for this position is a university degree (Master or comparable) in geophysics, applied geosciences, physics, mathematics, computer science, or a similar subject with above-average academic performance. Knowledge of the regional geology of Germany and the host rocks rock salt, shale and crystalline basement rock are expected. Practical programming experience in Python or C is an advantage. Excellent written and spoken English skills are required. Willingness to work in an interdisciplinary team is also required. If the candidate holds a PhD degree , the position may be available as a PostDoc position.

Ihre Aufgaben

Method development to create a workflow and reduce uncertainties through intelligent sampling strategies is composed of the following sub-aspects:

Contributing to the development of a workflow design and prototype for the implementation of geological interpolation methods considering uncertainties; Development of cost functions for optimal design of geometric-geologic repository-relevant properties; Further development of methods for multivariate information visualization of spatial correlations of the uncertainties; Visualization and communication of results .
